The Psychologist

As a Senior Clinical Psychologist I have worked for almost 20 years (NHS and private) helping people understand themselves and move forwards in their desired direction. I have worked in specialist areas such as ADHD, ASD, prisons as well as adult and child community services. Recent years have focused on aiding elite sports people improve their wellbeing and performance.

The Sports Person

Sport has been my passion for as long as I can remember. As a junior I played squash and golf at high amateur levels and sport has continued to be a key part of my life. More recently my spare time is taken up with golf, cycling and snowboarding.

Let Me Help You Be Your Best!

I am now combining my passion with my profession by applying my psychological knowledge, experience and skills to help sporting individuals, groups and teams enhance their wellbeing and performance.

Consultations

Whether it is for an individual or a team we would begin with an understanding of what your goals are, carry out targeted assessments, create a shared formulation (a structured understanding of all key factors which then guide the intervention), intervene and then review (to make sure it is working!)

Workshops

Workshops can be run to meet the needs of teams and groups, whether this is a dynamic process (e.g. leading to changes on the day) or providing psychological education (e.g. teaching). These are always fully interactive and engaging and can be run as stand-alone sessions or as part other consultations and interventions.

Gemma

Road Racer and Eastern Regional Cyclo-Cross Champion

Paul makes you feel relaxed and comfortable and really understands what might help you to improve in your chosen sport. He is very easy to talk to and totally gets it!

We have worked together on some key techniques which I continue to use for racing, including visualisation and attention focus. This has allowed me to step up the level of competition from regional level to national level. It has also helped contribute to my results, winning races and championships that for years I have come close to winning.

It has given me the confidence to believe in my ability. I am highly motivated, but Paul has helped me to be consistent without the highs and lows that competition can bring, by focussing on work/home/life balance to get the best from all areas and to know which plates to drop, if required, (i.e housework!)

Recently I was involved in an accident on my bike with a car. Before Paul’s sessions this would have been a real set back mentally as well as physically, but with the best techniques I now feel well equipped and am managing injuries and illness pro-actively, with a  balanced and healthy outlook.

Every sports person would benefit from Paul’s understanding and holistic approach. I found it really useful discussing how other people, supporters and competitors can affect my race and how best to manage what I need to happen in order to feel ready for the race. Whether that’s not having advice from the team manager on the start line, to parking somewhere or warming up somewhere particular. Recognising these important factors and how to deal with them really is important.

Sport is to some degree all in the mind and is so often overlooked just how important the psychological side is. It’s about getting the best out of you, mind and body.

These sessions also opened up mindfulness, breathing techniques and how beneficial I personally find yoga for my personal wellbeing. Ultimately the techniques and ideas discussed are life skills which are also applicable to everyday challenges at home, work, sports, hobbies and competition.

Kelvin Vince

PGA Professional Golfer

When I first met Paul I had got to a point where the standard of my golf had reached a low place. Over a period of around 10 years I had gone from being one of East Anglia’s leading players, regularly finishing in the top 10 of regional PGA events, to a place where fear and anxiety on the golf course left me barely able to finish rounds and finding myself at the bottom of the field.

Paul did a thorough and comprehensive assessment of me, both on the golf course and away from it, before creating a plan for my improvement. Using a wide and varied set of techniques he has set me on a path which is undoubtedly leading me to better performance by being more relaxed and confident whilst maintaining realistic expectations.

The work Paul has done with me, alongside the improvements which I have made with my swing coach, gives me the firm belief that my best golf could be ahead of me.
